Scientists say much of the debris will end up in the great, amorphous zone known as the Pacific Garbage Patch, where fragments of modern society hang in the water, leaching chemicals and contaminating fish and seabirds. But a fraction, maybe 5 percent to 10 percent, of the tsunami debris will wash up on shore.
